The Khayelitsha Cookie Company

KCC started its operations in a community center in Khayelitsha, where an earlier venture that aimed to train the local women in baking had functioned. The previous venture had been started on a non-profit basis by a local baking company, Snowflake. It had imparted training to several poor women using ovens donated to the community.

However, it had failed to generate the expected results of equipping the women with skills and providing them with income generating opportunities. This was because the training material and the recipes were written in English, while most the women in Khayelitsha could not understand English...

The Results

Some of the women working in KCC had never been employed before and were living on government grant. Their lives changed considerably after their association with this venture. Once they had joined KCC, they were trained on different aspects of not only baking but also in marketing and customer service. The full time employment also raised their self-esteem. According to one of the employees, coming to work every morning made her feel proud...

Looking Ahead

After the initial success of the venture, Polak expected KCC to reach the break-even point by early 2007. She had several plans up her sleeve. Polak planned to export cookies to other developed countries in Europe and the US.

As the concept was scalable and sustainable, Polak announced plans to introduce a similar program in some areas in the US, like Mississippi and New Orleans where several disadvantaged communities lived. According to her, it was important to treat these ventures as businesses rather than as charity...
